About this place
Sake poured from a wooden barrel is served in a masu, a small wooden cup, and pairs naturally with a few plates to share. Visitors have mentioned enjoying barrel-aged sake during the day at Tarumatsu Ueno, a bar with more than 70 years of history. It suits a leisurely drink centred on sake. One guest chose lighter bites, such as chilled greens, while others enjoyed crisp, piping-hot fried oysters, sesame-dressed mackerel and marinated firefly squid as accompaniments.
The menu lists sake from around Japan, including the Ishikawa junmai Kikuhime and Fukushima junmai Sharaku. There is also a daily “hidden sake”; ask a member of staff about the label and price, or make a little discovery of the day’s pour. Beyond sake, options include Sapporo Draft Beer Black Label and Hoppy sets in white or black. They offer a change of pace when you want to start with a familiar drink instead.
At lunchtime, set meals such as tuna cuts, fried horse mackerel and fried chicken are listed at ¥800 each. The restaurant therefore offers an option for a proper meal as well as daytime drinks. It is described as suitable for solo diners, and there is counter seating. Reservations are available; contact the restaurant in advance if your party size or timing is set.
